The SM517 robust windshield and dashboard car mount holds smartphones up to 5.2” tall, including the iPhone 5, 5S, 5C and all previous iPhone models (such as the 4S and 3G), LG Optimus G, Nokia Lumia 1020, and Motorola Moto X. It also holds midsize (7” screen size) tablets, including the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Kindle Fire HD, and Google Nexus 7. Its a fairly sturdy product, but is somewhat of a compromise if you intend to use it with a phone too.

The unit seems pretty good. I bought this we the intention of being able to use my Nexus 7 to view TorqueApp but most of the time it will be used to hold my Nexus 5 for navigation duty. It looks like it will be decent mount for the Nexus 7, however, there are a few things I noticed that make it not as great for the Nexus 5.

The good:

1. Suction cup feels like it will rip your window out of the car if you were to pull hard enough.
2. The mount is sturdy
3. The spring loaded "fingers" seem to be easy enough to get devices in and out of

The bad:

1. The longer "fingers" that you need to fit larger phones and tables seem kind of weak. You can see them flex a good amount when you compress the springs to slide the phone in. Makes me a little nervous that some person trying to cram their phablet into it may break them or if I were to accidentally tug my power cord it might snap them off. Unfortunately it is not possible to use the shorter fingers for a phone the size of the nexus 5.

2. The backing covers up the camera on my Nexus 5 and probably every other phone on the market. The backing plate that holds the fingers is too tall to fit a phone in sideways, like shown in the product image. Therefore, when you place the phone in the vertical orientation, the backing plate and/or fingers cover up the rear camera. I have used my Samsung S3 window mount to film driving many times without this issue. I don't think there is any phone in existence that would not have a problem in this mount except for maybe the largest of phablets with a camera positioned on the very edge. You can offset the phone to the side a bit to let the camera peek out around the side of the backing plate, but then i fear it is not supported well enough and may slip out.

Summary:

This is a well made product that seems fairly robust, but being that it is designed for tablets, it tends to be a compromise for phones. The product is marketed to tablets so this is not a fault, but it is something to be aware of if you will be using it for both.

Makeshift camera mount for Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3"

Please don't fault me for using this as a non-standard use. I'm reporting my results in hopes they'll be helpful regardless.

I didn't want to spend the money on a GoPro, especially when my Samsung Mega has an awesome 1080p video camera. I set out to mount this to the front of my chainsaw helmet (think of a hard hat with a flat spot on the front). It worked great. The suction cup holds wonderfully, considering the movement.

My only complaint about my use was the weight of the phone, pulling my helmet. Aside from that, it held in place wonderfully. I did add a rubber band from the bottom clip to the top, just to make sure the phone didn't break loose and fall on the chainsaw (or land in a pile of saw dust). Had I been using this in a car, I'd never have worried about such a thing.

You can mount the phone with one hand, given the way the springs work. My Samsung Mega is slightly larger than the Galaxy Note but fit just fine. I stopped using it for the chainsaw cam, due to the weight -- but I'll likely install it in my car, just not on the windshield. It annoys me to have stuff stuck there. I'll put it on the dash, but I know it will hold just fine with the included adhesive disk. It has that super-strong 3M adhesive on it that I love.

Great for studying

Using an Ipad Mini for medical school and all the cases I've tried have not been able to adjust to an appropriate viewing position, or have been stable enough to use a stylus or finger type on without the mini tipping over (I'm looking at a $40 apple mini folding case that's cute but crappy in terms of structural design when you try to interact with the screen).

With the secure suction mounting base and adjustable viewing position (up/down + second rotation joint for screen position) the iPad mini is able to be used on a smaller surface area than a traditional folding case and also is more steady.

Tired of holding your mini while sketching notes onto the whiteboard? Stick it to the damn whiteboard and have two free hands. Tired of worrying about your $400 piece of tech getting knocked onto the floor and shattered by a careless muscle spasm when on a 16 hour coffee binge? Get this mount. It was made to be used when bouncing along at a highway at 75+mph while hanging from your windshield. They made this to hang from your friggen windshield. You'll be using this with the mount being held to the table by suction + gravity + the weight of the iPad mini + when you are writing the force will probably be directed downward through the mount towards the table.

I've found that It will stay steady on the Starbucks/library/auditorium table without issue. Just wet the base a bit and you are good to go. Unless you are at some hipster cafe where they use picnic tables or some thing that isn't smooth. Then just suction it to the cover of USMLE prep book you aren't looking at.

And yes, you can use a case on this while it is in the mount. I've used the i-Blason ArmorBox Kido Series for Apple iPad Mini Light Weight Super Protection Convertable Stand Cover Case ( Black) and haven't had a problem getting it to fit.

I am honestly surprised at how great a device this is. The suction pad will stick to almost anything -- and I tried! I put it in all sorts of different places all around the house. And it seals on very securely, as if it were bolted onto the surface. It seals/unseals very nicely, so it will be no problem to take it off the windshield and put it back on again every time you use the car. The joints both have tightening screws which will allow you to prevent the positioning from slipping. It looks like they won't start slipping over time, either, because they are secured in place with teeth.

After sticking it to all sorts of surfaces around the house, I realized it would actually be useful in many areas. Stick it to a table and watch a video while you eat or do paperwork, stick it to a counter and use it as a recipe reference, stick it to the mirror and watch something while you get ready, or stick it to something near your exercise machine. I have a feeling I'll either be bringing this with me everywhere, or buying more.

It also fits smart phones in portrait mode. Very nice.

At first, the size of this mount put me off as I was expecting something smaller and lighter. However, once you're driving around with your precious tablet clamped in place, you're likely to feel that it's well-protected inside this unit. It's the right size for both the 2012 and the 2013 versions of the Nexus 7, and should fit any other 7" tablet, mounted horizontally for navigation and video or vertically for book/magazine reading.

I've used it for additional navigation - the Osmand map app showing a more zoomed-out top-down north-up view than the satnav's 3D 'cockpit' view - and for watching videos. With the mount fixed with the suction cap at the bottom-middle of the windscreen it's at a good position for both. People who have had problems with the suction cap could try cleaning that part of the windscreen with rubbing alcohol or a dedicated screen cleaner, and rubbing the suction cap with a wet finger before pressing it firmly onto the screen and pressing down the lever hard.

I haven't used the mount much so there is still some concern about how much wear it can take before it dumps my tablet glass-downwards onto the gearstick, but so far it's looking good.

Sturdy build... but recommend simple mods

This cradle is solidly made and definitely of quite sturdy build. A previous reviewer commented on the clamps becoming slack in use. There was some evidence of this with one or two of mine, so I decided to bind a slither of cellotape around the base of all four of them before sliding them into position. Trust me, there's no chance these parts will work free any time soon. My only other concern was the limited amount of spring tension from the clamps. Although possibly secure for the normal usage, I was not prepared to trust it to hold my new device in a forward leaning position (as was my need) because the only form of grip, was provided by the natural spring tension of the plastic clamps and their rubber padding. I solved this problem to my own satisfaction by fitting a standard elastic band around the four clamps prior to fitting the tablet. This allowed me to set my tablet at any angle that took my fancy and failed to shake it free. Therefore I would highly recommend this item if you consider using these mods for total security at extreme angles and vibration.

Unconventional use, but it works

I wanted this to mount either a Kindle Paperwhite (original version) on the door of a kitchen cupboard above my worktop, so I can load it with my own recipes and save cluttering the place up with paper.

It works perfectly and, as protection against the sucker letting go (unlikely as I'm using the dashboard disk), I've tethered it to the door handle with a short length of braided, 30lb test fly line, so my Kindle won't wind up in pieces on the tiled floor.

The possibility of the Kindle slipping out of the mount, as it's tilted forwards, occurred to me. The tether helps ease my mind, but I have also cut shallow notches in the rubber pads which eliminate the problem entirely. However, rotated to the portrait position there is every possibility that anything heavier than my Kindle might slowly slip out of the mount as the rubber pads are not as grippy as they might be. I certainly wouldn't trust it in a car in the portrait position.

Works well with my Nexus 7 Tablet. It's well made and has a decent quality "feel" to it. It tightens up nicely and more importantly holds my tablet perfectly still without any sagging under the weight.
It's easy to attach and detach with the sucker and hasn't fallen off in the first week it's been on - it's nice that they included a wipe to make sure my screen was clean but I didn't use it and it wasn't a problem.
The two sets of arms supplied means it will probably fit most other tablets/phones should I change in the future - and it's easy to remove my tablet too without risking damage to tablet or bracket.

I wished I had paid a bit more and chosen an alternative, but I've had Arkon cradles for mobile phones in the past so I thought this would be a good buy.
Unfortunately this appears to be a nothing more than a large universal phone mount on a heavier duty suction base. My Galaxy Tab2 7in can only be mounted in landscape mode and its an extremely tight fit. It's impossible to fit into the cradle with the mount attached to either the windscreen or the supplied base without forcing the mount away due to the tight fit. The support legs are only about 2.5cm apart which means that the tablet isn't supported particularly well.
My advice is to shop around and pay a bit more. This mount is probably a great option for the larger smart phones around these days but I doubt it will stand up to supporting my tablet for very long.
