Great combination with the Startech Thunderbolt2 Docking station for macbooks

purchased this cable to use with my macbook pro that was hooked up to a startech thunderbolt dock. I had been using dongle, but they didnt work with teh startech dock. So i had the dock plugged into one of my thunderbolt ports, and an ugly heavy dongle plugged into the other. It kinda defeats the purpose of having a thunderbolt dock if i have to plug in multiple cables every day.

This cable worked wonders though. The dock recognized it and fired the display right up. Now I have two external displays plus the mac laptop screen, all running with a single thunderbolt cable to the laptop (plus power obviously). Couldnt be happier.

Inconsistent Operation. Free Replacement

For me, this cable worked pretty well for the first few months of use. While it was never 100% reliable and sometimes required a few removals and reinsertions or some jiggling, it worked well enough. I noticed that I had better luck when I pushed the cable up so perhaps there was some type of alignment issue.

However, the last few months have seen more and more deterioration to the point of it being almost unusable. I replaced it with a more traditional Mini DisplayPort to VGA female adapter which then uses a VGA to VGA cable and have experienced marked improvement. The price is great and perhaps I just got a lemon, but proceed with caution.

EDIT: Original 2 star rating changed to 4 stars rating.. After seeing this review, Cable Matters sent me a replacement cable free of charge. The replacement appears to work well but it should be noted that the original worked pretty well for the first few months of operation as well. Either way, a nice gesture by the company and now I have a backup option that hopefully will perform better than its predecessor. Good customer service!

Works As Intended - Cheap Feel

First I will mention that if you are looking for an adapter, this is not it. This is a male-to-male Mini Display to VGA cable, this is mentioned in the Product Description but I will just state it to avoid confusion.

I purchased this for use with my mid-2011 iMac and a supplementary monitor. Most standard computer monitors come with a VGA port unless you spend a little extra on them so this is an ideal tool for saving yourself a little money. It works as intended, linking my computer with an extra monitor for the desktop space. Though I was was slightly disappointed in the overall quality and feel of the product upon arrival.

The gold plated contacts (in the end, the important part) is indeed there and works well, I have yet to have an issue with the video quality whatsoever. The only worry I have is whether the very cheap-feeling plastic components with stand up to permanent use. As of yet, it is working just fine and I will update this review in the future if it fails to operate properly.

I recently purchased two Mac Mini 2012 computers equipped with ThunderBolt female outlets. I already had two LCD monitors with VGA connectors.

It was a "no brainer" decision to obtain two of these Cable Matters ThunderBolt Male to VGA Male cords to facilitate use of my older monitors with my new Mac Minis.

The Cable Matters cords did the job... right out of the box. The VGA connectors easily fastened to LCD monitors; the male ends of the connectors fit nicely into the appropriate ports on the Minis.

I would recommend this option to anyone requiring a similar setup.

Better than HDMI

I just got this cable in today....boy what a clarity difference as compared to high quality HDMI cable I was using (audioquest). The text was so much sharper. I find no fault to audioquest, just the OS and hardware layout. I have a 240 hz Philips 40" LCD with a samsung produced panel in it. I am using a Mac mini hooked up via Thunderbolt.

I found that there was no setting in the OS to Bring the screen top down in 1080P format or any others for that matter...about one inch of OS interface (top) was hidden. I was left to blindly guess where cursor was at with mac using HDMI to close/minimize open programs.

I also found that HDMI cable interface left a blurry text and way less sharp than the mini display port (T-Bolt) to VGA connection. To note....the HDMI did look ok. I simply used apple tv as output for audio. My Lady friend who owns a T-bolt display commented on how much sharper it looked....just shy of hers. She is kind of regretting the $1K purchase for non-TV smaller panel when I paid $300!

Hope this helps in your decision if you have the same setup...do not hesitate to purchase.

This cord has great functionality, but being that this is my third cord that I have purchased, please beware that this cord WILL BURN OUT EVENTUALLY. You get what you pay for though - my screen resolution is great, and there is no latency I can detect. Eventually though (it took me ~1 year) the cord will not connect with the thunderbolt properly. Not bad though for $9.

I purchased a thunderbolt to vga cable to connect my 2012 macbook air to a promax document camera. The promax has a built in switch to project what's under the camera and what's displayed on the macbook. However, this cable is not compatible with the promax doc camera. While connected to the promax doc camera, the display on my macbook turns on and off. I tried adjusting the display setting in the system preferences but could no get it to work. Thus, I gave it 4 stars. It does work fine when I connect the macbook directly to the LCD projector.

This is a 2 meters long Thunderbolt to VGA cable, I use this for my Mac Book Pro 15 ". I primarily use this connect my Macbook Pro 15" to my monitor, as I prefer an extra monitor for my video editing. Yesterday I also had the opportunity to use this with a projector. It works perfectly with a fraction price of the original apple product. If your external device has a connect for both HDMI and VGA, and unsure which one to buy; keep in mind that HDMI carried audio and visual to your monitor/projector while VGA only carries visual. If you need to carry visual as well you would need an extra wire. In my case I have both VGA and HDMI to thunderbolt cables- depending if I want the sound form my laptop to come out of my external screen (thus using HDMI) or I still want the sound from my laptop or I am connecting speakers directly to my laptop (in this case using this VGA.

As my Macbook Pro has the Thunderbolt port and I needed to link my laptop to a hotel's projector system in order to give a presentation [hotels only supply a VGA to PC cable [shame on you hotels ;-) ], I searched around Amazon & eBay for a sensibly priced Thunderbolt to VGA cable. I came across Cable Matter's product which fitted the bill and with Amazon's excellent delivery track record I purchased it.

Nicely packaged in a sturdy resealable plastic bag [great for travel purposes]. The cable is of great quality and it just worked straight away. The 2 metre length of cable allows for greater flexibility. I tested it at the hotel prior to the presentation and no set up necessary - it just worked out of the bag.
