Fast MAC and Windows PC backups

Working well on my MacBook Air mid-2012 model. I have a 300gb and a 1tb external connected already and wanted a good way to have an additional backup of those files. I have a ton of old home videos, family photos and "needledrops" (recordings of my old LP collection in lossless file format). This drive is FAST when connected via USB 3.0, it's quiet and works fine on a Windows Vista PC too. There is an NTFS driver on the hard drive already--until you install that on your MAC this drive is read-only. Afterward, it runs like any other hard drive. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a solution to run backups. It has a rugged plastic case and isn't huge or heavy. Certainly it would be a great choice as an off site backup.

It comes with a universal power supply that has several plugs for all sorts of power systems worldwide, so you can travel with it too. The included USB 3.0 cord plugs in firmly and I have had no problems with it. The drive spins up without issues when I wake my MacBook. Works fine waking up on the Windows machine too. No problems, fast, large capacity--terrific safeguard for my files and cheap insurance.

Good external hard disk

I bought this external hard disk to replace a Seagate Expansion 3 TB hard disk that failed in less than one year of service. I have had the Samsung for about four months now. It works great with good transfer rates, but the USB 3.0 connector is not very snug. If I ever pick the drive up to move it while it is connected to the computer, the connection to the computer is often lost temporarily.

Update 12/21/2013:

I ended up buying two of these Samsung D3 drives for external backup.

Apparently, these Samsung D3 disks are actually made by Seagate. Some sources for the drives list them as Samsung Seagate.

After I did a BIOS update for my computer last week, both D3 drives occasionally drop off my list of external drives, then appear again when they feels like it. I normally do not allow my computer to sleep, but the BIOS update turned that function back on. The sleep mode probably causes the system to loose connection with the drives. I had the same issue with two 3TB Seagate Expansion drives earlier this year, and they both later failed after about a year of use.

When I run the Seagate Driver Detect software, it does not detect the D3 drives. When I run the Seagate USB Drive List software, the software finds the D3 drives. When I run Seagate SeaTools for Windows, it finds the D3 drives. However, the detected serial numbers for the drives are different in the two Seagate software applications. Go figure.

When I finally figured out the real serial numbers (the ones Seagate uses) for the drives and went to the Seagate website for firmware updates, it said the firmware is up to date for the drives.

When I check for driver updates using Windows and System Mechanic, they both tell me the drivers are up to date for the D3 drives. When I run my DriverFinder software, it does not detect the Samsung D3 drives at all.

Again, go figure. These things are Seagate ghosts!

By the way, I ran both ATTO Disk Benchmark and CrystalDiskMark speed tests on these D3 disks and they under perform the Seagate Expansion and Baclup+Desk external USB 3.0 disks by about 20 percent.

Transferred my music and films onto this drive to use with a Fusion5 Quad Core Google Internet TV BOX Mini PC Streaming Media Player - Supports Netflix, Youtube, KODI(XBMC) and many more. 1GB/8GB, Fully Loaded Smart TV Box, Google Android 5.1 Lollipop, Amlogic S905 64-bit, Up to 2 GHz Quad-core CPU & Penta-core GPU, Bluetooth 4.0 over the domestic Ethernet network. The Samsung Disk Management software is a bonus. I usually skip these types of applications but having tried the Automated Backup Option, I'm converted. If you use the ABO, customise it for your needs rather than going for the default blanket options.
There's also a Secret Area option, for encrypted, password protected data, but I'm not paranoid enough to need it.
Not sure you can get a better external drive at this price.

With all the media files that I have been accumulating over the years, my hard drives have been struggling to keep up.
I had also recently installed a solid state drive to help my computer run faster.

So felt that I wanted to store the less often used files on an external drive.
These Samsung’s seem to fit the bill.

The transfer speeds are good and with the USB 3.0 connectors, speed is very good.

Granted, they can’t touch the solid state hard disc’s speed but is not bad at all. They also do go to sleep after a while so will have to “warm” up before data is transferred.

Reliability wise, once or twice my computer failed to recognise them but once unplugged and plugged them back in they have been fine.
Hasn’t stopped my purchasing another one of these for even more space.

Would recommend for those who need extra storage space at a reasonable price.

Almost silent operation, simple to use and holds so much for such a good price. Sits nicely on the desk with no overbalancing ( as some others have done) no cradle to get broken (again had this happen with others) and doesn't get hot if I forget to unplug it - although rare as once pc is off a bright purple/blue light flashes over and over to let you know the external hardrive is still plugged in which is something I really like.

I am no techy but it does what I need it to, stores all my file, photos etc and has the option for you to auto back up in case you forget to do it manually.

Its actually a Seagate hardrive which I have always found good even though made by Samsung. Considering the storage capability its actually not that big - about the size of a small paperback and looks nice. It feels strong and is not that heavy.

Its quick to upload to and just as quick to download or search to find your file and reading or listening straight from it has not caused me any problems - am using it with windows 7.

This USB Desktop HD is great. Just plug and play and your away. No formatting required and it is so easy to setup. The most difficult part is sorting through all the different plug adapters to find the one you need. And the adapter is just a simple slide-up and click and its done.

The Disk Manager Software that comes with it, is easy to use, but its backup program is so, so, slow. You also have to be careful not to delete the pre-installed files. I don't think you would be happy at the results if you did.

You can create an additional security drive and set its size as you require, as a pre-fixed size or an ever expanding one. Over all this Ext. HD is great value for money even if the 3TB claim is about 250GB more than the HD actually has. On the plus side you can unplug it from one computer and straight into another with no problems.

Nice understated-looking small black drive with four headlights blazing! Whatever, I have a 1.5 TB Samsung Story with an adjustable headlight which I have used for many years - so found relaible and which is basically full of images and music and doiwnloads etc. I require more space, so this 3TB version is ideal and an obvious choice. In use, it seems fast and simply works away in the background. I like things which do what I want and then shut up and get on wiith it! A good value USB 3.0 fast drive.

Edit: Mine eventually caused BSODs galore as it went tits up as an external drive. I got sick of it and decided to rid it of the USB 3.0 cladding and install it as an internal Seagate Barracuda 3TB hard drive. Thankfully it now works very well. I noted that the pcb used for the external drive was dirty with components looking eaten by some kind of acid.
