Perfect Solution For Some Situations

I just got a new Windows 8 computer, and wanted to attach my existing monitors: a newish Viewsonic with only DVI & VGA, and an old CRT with VGA only. The computer came with two video ports: DVI and HDMI. Thinking a VGA-->HDMI adapter would work, I went to Badio Shock, where an adapter (made in China) would have meant a second mortgage. So I bought this little cable, and 48-hours later it arrived.

I turned everything off, and plugged the female VGA end into my (hard-wired) VGA cable from the CRT, the other end into the HDMI port on my GPU. Re-booted, adjusted the settings in Windows 8, and bingo! Second monitor works as it did before on my XP machine, actually better. One negative is that the screw holes on the VGA end of this adapter are designed so it's impossible to attach the two screws on any male VGA plug. Another reviewer suggested duct tape, but if you attach this cable behind a desktop and never move it, there should be no problem. (Just check the tightness of the connection every six months or so.) For a laptop application, this shortcoming could be more of a problem...

I am also aware of a second solution to my specific situation that might have been better: Using TWO adapters, plug the DVI monitor into the HDMI port, and plug the VGA monitor into the DVI port. But this adapter cable worked exactly as advertised, and solved the problem at 1/4 the cost of local retail. Computer specifics vary so much that this adapter is a bit of a crap shoot, but it worked for my situation.

Was ok for about 8 months then failed

I have had to downgrade this product to two stars because it's been slowly failing in the last two months or so, (about 8 months after purchase. The monitor which I hook my computer up to no longer displays the computer screen and I have made sure that the HDMI port on my laptop is still fine. Granted, because I used this with my laptop I was constantly disconnecting and reconnecting the adapter which may have caused it to fail earlier. It did last a solid 8 month though before failing, so it gets two stars. I will not be buying this again, but will spend a bit more on a quality adapter.

Cheapest way to connect a new computer to an older monitor. My only complaint is that I was not able to screw in both sides with the connector screws. For some reason only one would catch, if I move my computer too much, the connection is sometimes lost. Since I'm not moving my computer around while it's hooked up, not a big deal, but it's the only reason I don't feel like I should give it the 5 star rating. Would recommend and buy again.

This HDMI to VGA converter did not work at all for 2 laptops and 2 monitors

I tried this HDMI to VGA adapter with 2 different HP Envy laptops and 2 different Samsung monitors, but all combinations of laptops connected to monitors did not work at all. Specifically, the monitor screen went dark. I tested both laptop HDMI ports and both monitor VGA ports with other devices and confirmed that all 4 ports worked fine. I rebooted my laptop during each attempt, but I didn't even see a momentary flicker on the screens. With each combination of laptop and monitor, I tried duplicating the laptop screen, extending the laptop screen, and switching video to the monitor only, but each attempt didn't affect the dark screen at all. I concluded this adapter does nothing whatsoever and returned it for a full refund from the Fulfillment-By-Amazon seller. UPS picked up the return box today with the RMA slip inside, so Amazon hasn't deposited my refund yet.

I'm very happy with this converter as it works wonderfully with my Raspberry Pi model B. I found a similar cable in a retail computer store for 49.99 so I’ll never buy retail again. I read one review of someone that was having issues with this cable for their Rasp Pi but more than likely their issue was caused but their power supply. I’m using a Verizon charger with a USB to Micro USB with an output of 5 volts 1A and it works like a charm. If you're running less than 5V 1A and overloading your USB ports you may have problems so check power specs before assuming it's a converter problem. This particular cable is an excellent buy!

I was a little skeptical about this product, since HDMI is a purely digital interface and VGA is essentially analog. But the other reviews are correct: this simple little dongle actually does a conversion. My application is to use a small VGA monitor with an Apple TV, not so much for video [We have a large HDMI TV for that] but as the music interface - I have found it absurd to dedicate a big TV for an audio menu interface (whereas using an iPhone or iPod does make sense for that, it also seems like overkill, IMO). Small old VGA monitors can be had cheap and are big enough for menu selection yet small enough for a bookshelf, etc.

This adapter works well with both my Beaglebone Black (with an additional MicroHDMI to HDMI adapter) and with my Raspberry Pi, but please note: it does not work on all monitors. I have an old (circa 2003) LCD with which it DOES NOT work, though it works perfectly with a newer (circa 2007) Dell LCD that it does work with. I'm not quite sure why the old one doesn't work (perhaps it requires more power than can be pushed over HDMI), but I bought 4 of these devices, and none of them work on that monitor. My other monitors work well, though, and the devices even work at a resolution of 1920x1200 on a fairly new Acer monitor (although it has HDMI input so I won't be using them with that monitor).

Took a chance in ordering this product despite many reviews saying this does not work. Got the converter shipped quickly. But this one just doesn't work. I tried with connecting Mac Mini to a VGA Monitor and later tested by connecting windows laptop, desktop with no luck. So the issue is with this converter.
Just wanted to share my experience so others can make more informed decision before buying this.

It seems like it is not worth the cost of returning it back to Amazon. May be in future I'll stick to local brick and mortar store for such smaller items.
