Microsoft revealed earlier on this week how they plan to increase the storage capacity of many Office 365 subscriptions to 1Tb. This includes the rather reasonable Office 365 Home Premium plan. This is great news for people who are becoming more dependant and have a subscription for other reasons – i.e. if your are an iPad user of Office.
Cloud Storage
On the OneDrive blog post Omar Shahine explains how the upgrade will go live for new and existing subscribers in July. And I, for one cannot wait. In fact I’ve started moving a number of my large files from Google Drive to OneDrive. That way I can turn off my monthly subscription for additional Drive space and just use OneDrive for cloud storage.
Cloud Strategy
Microsoft have been focusing heavily on their cloud strategy over the last year or so and this is another feather in its cap. To have such a great deal for consumer and pro users will encourage more folk to move onto the subscription plans.
Expect to see more of this kind of stuff as Microsoft position themselves as the platform provider of choice for those wishing to move to the cloud. Google and Amazon may have captured the imagination of the public when it comes to the likes of email and book services but many professionals will be looking to Microsoft as a trusted provider of software and services for the Enterprise.
Windows 8
For Microsofts sake I hope they manage to improve the perception of Windows 8 so that many more folk can enjoy the benefits of a more integrated solution. Whilst I’m predominantly a Mac user I am not immune to the charms of Windows and would like to see a better end user experience. That way I may end up running Windows on my Mac more often.
Having a good cloud storage offer is one way that they can start winning round more people and perhaps get Windows 8 (or its successor) onto many more computers.
