It’s no secret that I love my iPad but its not that brilliant as a Kindle alternative. It is just a bit too big… To my absolute delight the new iPad Mini on the other hand is brilliant as a Kindle – once you’ve installed the free app. Weighing in at just over 300g it feels like a small hard back book in your hand. It also fits neatly in my coat pocket so it can go with me everywhere. Just like any killer Kindle would.
One accessory I felt necessary was a silicone back as I like to be able to put the device down with damaging it or the surface I’ve put it on. In this respect the Nexus 7 trumps the iPad Mini as the strong rubbery back means that you don’t need something else to avoid this issue. That minor niggle aside this is one cool cookie.
Amazon should be incredibly pleased at what a good job the iPad Mini does for them. Even with the Kindle Fire HD in the wild many people want the comfort of knowing that their device will just work – beautifully. And the iPad Mini is an excellent way of consuming content from the massive Kindle library.
If you already own an iPad it might be hard to justify splashing the cash on the Mini version. If your in the market for a go anywhere eBook reader and all round smart computing device then the Mini might just be the tablet for you… I’m so pleased with mine that I wouldn’t want to go back to a world without it and am even considering giving up its bigger brother – more on that soon…
Oh and in case you hadn’t guessed this post was put together on the iPad Mini itself… So it’s not just a killer Kindle after all.
