5 top tips for the post-PC era

Post PC era

1. Get some productivity apps

Right, so you need something to open and edit documents, spreadsheets and probably presentations. Irrespective of what flavour you go for you need something in your arsenal. I flip between Pages, Keynote and Docs to Go. Pages and Keynote are the better all round apps but Docs to Go integrates well with Google Docs and Dropbox. There are other options out there; I’m sure you’ll find something to suit your needs.

2. Store some files in the cloud

The need to store files in the cloud allows you to work on a file on a multitude of devices with the latest version being available to what you are using at a given point in time.

There’s lots of choice out there – Dropbox, Google Drive / Docs, box.com. My personal far at the moment is SkyDrive as it provides 25gb of free storage and the usual syncing options that you’d want from you cloud storage. The one thing it is lacking is the option to email direct from SkyDrive although there are ways around this.

3. Replace your notebook

Stop taking bulky notepads to meetings and take your notes electronically. Colleagues I know use the basic notes app, whereas I’m evangelical about Evernote. Chuck that notepad you won’t regret it.

4. Use the camera

Use your camera to take photos of notes, articles that you want to read later and things of general interest. Personally I do not use my iPad camera to take photos of landscapes as it’s more a tool to help me get things done and ideas expressed efficiently.

5. Cheat

If all else fails then you can always remote back to a regular computer. Install LogMeIn Free on an Internet connected computer and Ignition on your iPad when you need to do something that can only be achieved on a full fat device.
