If you want to connect an iPad Air to a VGA Projector you first need to get hold of a Lightning to VGA Adapter [US Link]. Unfortunately there aren’t any cheap alternatives and you need to purchase the original from Apple. This is because the adapter has a chip inside which protects against using lesser quality alternatives.
Aspect Ratio
Once you have the adapter all you need to do is plug it into the Lightning port and then run a VGA male to male cable [US Link] from it to your projector. This works better if you have an older 4:3 ratio projector as this matches the display ratio from the iPad. It will work with 16:9 and 16:10 projectors but you end up with black ‘ears’ either side of the image.
Old Adapters
You cannot connect an old style 30 pin VGA adapter into your iPad with a Lightning to 30 pin adapter as this method does not support video output. I’ve tried it and that doesn’t work.
