Google Communities is an excellent new feature of Google Plus and provides Plus users with a simple way of keeping in touch.
The format is dead simple. If you’ve ever used or seen a forum then you know how communities works. It’s this emphasis on simplicity which makes Communities so good. Sure there are fewer people on Google Plus than Facebook but for some reason Communities feels like a more coherent social strategy than Facebook Pages.
iOS App
I guess this coherence I mention is because Communities is available within the iOS (mobile) app. This makes it incredibly simple for phone and tablet users to leverage the power of Communities whilst on the go.
Easier than Circles
Circles is a great idea but in practise adds a little bit of friction to posting on Google Plus. What’s nice about Communities is that once you’ve joined one you no longer need to worry about which circle posts to the Community go in as it goes to everyone who has joined.
Recommendations
My two fave Communities at the moment are “Build A Company” moderated by the social wizz Robert Scoble and “Cult of Mac“.
Let me know if you have any recommendations as I’m always interested in hearing about new and exciting groups.
