I make no secret that I prefer the iPad Mini to Nexus 7 but there are some areas where the Google device is better. This post will look at a few of these areas to help prospective buyers with an important purchasing decision.
Rubberised back
One of the things I really like about the Nexus 7 is that it has a back which is rubberised so you can place it down on regular surfaces without damage to either. With the iPad Mini there is an issue with the metal back as if its not going to get scratched then its going to do some scratching of its own.
Fits in your inside pocket
Sure the iPad Mini fits into an outside coat pocket but the Nexus fit into my inside jacket pocket making it that much safer. It felt more secure in my jacket and was less likely to be taken out by someone else.
USB support
The OTG cable enables Nexus users to plug in keyboards, mice and other USB devices for charging. The Apple adaptor is not so kind with compatibility and doesn’t supply the level of juice needed to power some devices (such as charge a MIFI).
One trick Google have missed here though is to natively support USB memory. It’s available on other Android tablets so it would be good to see that as an option.
Price
If you don’t have the money to spring for an iPad Mini then you will not be disappointed with the vastly cheaper alternative. Sure it’s a bit thicker and build quality isn’t to the Apple standard but that doesn’t detract from the Nexus being a great tablet.
Conclusion
So there you have it, the Nexus 7 is definitely stronger in certain areas than the iPad Mini. For my money though the iPad is a superior device and the horse that I have backed. However if you are in the market for a bargain tablet then you can do much worse than to get a Nexus 7.

… cpu twice as fast… 😀 google services integrated… 😀 basically from productivity NOT gaming(3d in particular) and taking photos with a 8in “book-like” device nexus kills ipad mini. sorry, but you are an official biased apple fan boy with “objectivity” of yours.
If you spent a bit more time looking through my blog you’d notice that I’m a technology fanboy – owning Android, Windows and iOS devices.
Having spent money on both the iPad Mini and Nexus 7 I do not agree that the Nexus 7 kills it. That said you are entitled to your opinion and I’m glad you chose to share it here. Thanks.
you’re just tryin’ to make fun of google products. i wouldn’t consider rubber back an advantage, nexus 7 should have aluminium body. fitting in a pocket isn’t an advantage either, cause it’ll fit in that pocket, but you won’t be able to take a seat unless you have really baggy pants.
I challenge you to review both devices from a productivity perspective, i.e., emails, browsing, e-reading, organizing, online doc storage, management, skype-kind video communication, online content(social) management/browsing, i.e., things that are everyday productivity tasks, useful things to do.
Of course, nobody wants that, because kids want these gadgets and kids want 3d violence and making photos with every device there is, apple covers those kind of requirements, so don’t bother… 😀
I know some apple users who claim their device is a productivity lightsaber while 80% of apps in the device are games and entertainment apps which are built to steal your productivity time.
